Mandatory NSW Strata Committee Training

NSW Fair Trading has released further details about the new mandatory training requirements for strata committee members, following many enquiries from committee members across our portfolio. 

The full details are available on the NSW Fair Trading website, and we have provided a summary of the key information below. 

What committee members need to know 

From 1 October 2026, all newly appointed and reappointed strata committee members in NSW will be required to complete mandatory training delivered by NSW Fair Trading. 

Key requirements include: 

• The training must be completed within three months of appointment or reappointment to the strata committee. 
• Committee members who do not complete the training within the required timeframe will automatically cease to hold their committee position. 
• The first training module, Introduction to Strata Committee Rights and Responsibilities, applies to committee members appointed between 1 October 2026 and 30 September 2027. 
• The course is free, online and self-paced, taking approximately one hour to complete. 
• Training will be accessed through the NSW Strata Hub.

While the training is mandatory for eligible committee members, it is available to anyone interested in learning more about strata governance. 

NSW Fair Trading will publish the course link on its strata committee training webpage by 1 October 2026. 

Who is exempt?   

The mandatory training requirement does not apply to: 

• People filling a casual vacancy on a committee for less than three months 
• Two-lot strata schemes 
• Association committees for community, neighbourhood and precinct schemes 
• Company title buildings and Building Management Committees (BMCs) 
• Members of the Australian College of Strata Lawyers 
• Licensed strata managing agents

This training initiative is designed to help committee members better understand their roles, responsibilities and obligations, ultimately supporting stronger governance and better outcomes for strata communities.
