Living in close proximity means some level of everyday noise is a normal part in strata living. At the same time, everyone has the right to peacefully enjoy their home. Noise can be a sensitive issue, particularly when it is ongoing, excessive or occurs at unreasonable times. A shared understanding of what is considered reasonable noise, along with clear and respectful ways to raise concerns, helps support positive communication and prevents small issues from escalating.
Strata laws, by-laws and model rules require residents not to create a nuisance or hazard for others. This includes using their lot or common property in a way that unreasonably interferes with another person’s comfort, use or enjoyment of their home or shared spaces.
Noise may be considered unreasonable depending on its volume, duration and frequency. While some level of day-to-day noise is expected in strata living, excessive or persistent noise can be deemed a breach of by-laws and managed accordingly.

Once the source is confirmed, they can advise on the most appropriate next steps.
If the previous steps have not resolved the matter, the strata manager or the committee can issue a formal notice requiring compliance with the relevant by-law. This sets clear expectations in line with the relevant by-laws and encourages compliance.
If all internal options have been exhausted, you may seek guidance or dispute resolution through your State’s strata regulator.

This includes steering clear of confrontational behaviour, making complaints without clear information, or expecting immediate outcomes without following the appropriate process.
