General safety advice to manage some common issues
Floods: Stay updated on weather alerts and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters—they can be deeper and more dangerous than they seem. See Brisbane City Council’s guidance below, that applies to all regions.
Fallen Trees: Keep clear of any fallen trees or branches, as they may have brought down power lines. Report hazards to local authorities promptly.
Water Leaks: Inspect areas around windows, doors, and roofs for any signs of leakage. Contain water leaks using towels, buckets, or other temporary measures until professional assistance arrives. If there’s a potential safety risk, such as a ceiling collapse, isolate the area to prevent accidents.
Waste Disposal
Garbage collection services may have been temporarily been suspended, so try to minimise waste where possible. Double or triple bag rubbish to reduce odours until the service is resumed.
Please inform us of any repair work and we will escalated the matter to the appropriate channel. Please note: if the repairs are determined to be the responsibility of the lot owner, any associated costs will be charged to them.
Brisbane City Council Guidance
In the event of flooding and associated impacts enact your flood emergency management plans (if applicable).
Some high-rise building occupants may experience periods of isolation and service outages due to basement flooding.
Where essential electrical services are located in flood affected basements, seek professional advice from a qualified and licensed electrical contractor with priority ahead of the weather event to ensure electrical safety. Following the weather event, electrical services should be inspected prior to reconnection, and consideration should be given to relocating your switchboard and wiring away from flood-prone areas of the property.
There are other practical measures and improvements that building owners and body corporates can take to protect themselves and to recover more quickly from flooding events. Council has prepared an information sheet to provide technical guidance for improving flood resilience in high-rise buildings.
More information, including the ‘Building back better basements’ information sheet, is available here.
During a flood event, for any emergency electrical situations call Triple Zero (000).
