How Eco 5 Is Helping Communities Live More Sustainably
The Eco 5 program was designed to explore how food waste diversion could work in a high-rise environment. Using compact benchtop dehydrator technology, the pilot invited residents to rethink how they manage everyday waste and to see what could be achieved when a community works together.
The 12-week pilot was launched to see the effects of food waste diversion in vertical living using benchtop dehydrator technology. The pilot included 50 households from a high-rise community, made up of 26-65 year old owners and renters.
The results were impressive and show what is possible when innovation meets community effort.
The Impact
- 2038L of food waste was diverted from landfill. The equivalent of 17 full 120L bins of food waste.
- A reduction of one to two bags of general waste per household each week
- 1810 kilograms of CO2e avoided – the same environmental benefit as planting 87 trees
- More mindful habits formed around waste, recycling and daily consumption
These outcomes demonstrate that even small-scale changes can have a measurable impact on emissions, landfill reduction and community awareness. When adopted across more buildings, the benefits multiply quickly.
