Winter is here, is your building ready?

As the cooler months roll in, now is the perfect time to check in on your building’s winter readiness. Whether it’s reducing fire risks, improving energy efficiency or tackling common cold weather concerns like condensation, a proactive approach keeps everyone safer and more comfortable.

Smart tips for strata living this winter

Condensation control

Closed-up rooms and indoor heating can lead to condensation build-up, damaging walls, encouraging mould and creating an unhealthy environment. We encourage residents to take a few simple steps to help prevent condensation in their homes:

    • Open windows regularly to allow airflow, especially after showering or cooking
    • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans to reduce moisture
    • Keep internal doors open to allow warm air to circulate

Fire safety in the cooler months

As temperatures drop, the use of heaters, electric blankets and other appliances increases – along with the risk of fire. Residents should take extra precautions and be aware of key fire safety practices:

    • Avoid overloading power boards or using damaged cords
    • Never leave heaters, heated hair appliances, candles or cooking unattended
    • Store flammable items away from heat sources and out of common areas
    • Be familiar with your building’s fire safety plans and procedures
    • Charge and store lithium battery-powered devices safely, never in common areas or near exits

Sustainable winter living

Winter is a great time to think about energy efficiency, not only to reduce the environmental impact but also to lower energy costs across the building. Residents and committees should consider a few practical ways to live more sustainably this winter:

    • Seal gaps and cracks in windows and doors to prevent heat loss
    • Switch to LED lighting in common areas for better energy efficiency
    • Keep blinds or curtains closed at night to retain warmth

Maintenance matters

Cold, wet weather can take a toll on buildings. A quick maintenance check now can prevent costly issues later. We recommend keeping an eye out on a few key areas and notifying your strata team promptly if anything needs attention:

    • Clear gutters and downpipes to prevent blockages and water damage
    • Check for cracks or leaks in walls, windows and roofing
    • Review lighting in common areas – darker days mean lights are on longer

Whether you’re a committee member, building manager or resident, winter is an ideal time to take small, preventative steps that will make your home safer, warmer and more efficient for everyone.
